The crew & the arc

Cosmanos in Japan

Same emotional arc as Italy: Tokyo (Rome energy) → Kanazawa (Florence soul) → Kyoto (atmospheric close). Food-first, high-energy, walkable — built for a crew that can go all day and still take Justin’s “one more stop.”

Brian

Remote worker in denial

Will probably “just hop on one quick call” from the hotel lobby in Shinjuku. Risk profile: laptop open at breakfast, Slack on the train, and half the temples experienced through a calendar invite he meant to decline. The group’s job is to drag him outside before the out-of-office expires.

Justin

Brother · committed foodie · late-night captain

Treats every market like a tasting menu and every “maybe one more” as a binding contract. After dinner he wants neon, tiny bars, skyline views, or arcades — not a second meal. Japan is his sport; this plan assumes he wins the late shift, and that Brian “budgeted for this.”

Lulubel

Lou · world traveler · accent may vary

Game for every long walk and every scenic detour. Somewhere mid-trip her English might pick up a little international flair — French café one day, vaguely Italian the next — and she’ll narrate the temples like a soft travel show between station hops. Full energy, full commentary, full vacation mode.

Jimmy Boy

Jim · healthy-eating radar always on

Here for the good stuff that still loves you back: grilled fish, miso soup, greens, tofu, sashimi, and solid protein. Markets mean hunting the clean plates; dinner books mean ordering the fish. Happy to go wherever the day points — as long as the meal doesn’t fight back.

When to go

Two solid windows — pick one. Both skip sticky Japanese summer and peak holiday crush. From Austin, either feels mild and walkable all day.

Option A

Late May

~70–75°F days · mild nights · higher humidity than fall

Right after Golden Week (late April–early May), so trains and temples are less packed and hotel rates usually ease. Late spring greens are on, days are long enough for big morning + afternoon missions, and outdoor dinners / night walks still feel easy. Watch for the early edge of rainy season in some years — pack a light shell.

Why this window: longer daylight, fresh post-holiday calm, great for high-energy walking days before summer heat arrives.

Option B

Early–mid October

~68–74°F days · cooler evenings · lower humidity

After peak summer humidity and before full autumn foliage crowds. Clearer, drier air than May — nicer for long temple climbs (Fushimi) and full-day circuits. Evenings cool off for neon walks and river hangs without the sticky feel. Book a bit earlier if you want shoulder-season hotels before leaf-peeping peaks later in October–November.

Why this window: comfort weather, lower humidity, excellent photo light, and still warm enough for dinner + nightlife without winter layers.

Either way: stack a strong morning/afternoon plan, then let dinner and nightlife run. Excursions (Uji, Arashiyama, Fushimi) are clearly marked in the days below.
